Entering her 50’s is a powerful time for women, and it should be celebrated and embraced. However, it’s easy to start worrying about ageing in terms of our skin and makeup routine. The good news is that you can keep using the makeup products and looks that you’ve always loved, you might just need to try a couple of new tips and techniques to stay glowing and radiant...

BEAUTY TIPS THAT WILL HELP YOU LOOK YOUNGER IN YOUR 50’S

1. Create a radiant base

To ensure that your makeup is looks glowing and youthful, it is essential that you create a radiant base. As one would expect, this starts with a dedicated skincare routine. Exfoliation, cleansing, and hydration is the key. Use a chemical AHA exfoliant as this gently exfoliates the surface of the skin, removing dead skin cells and stimulating cell turnover. AHA’s can improve the texture and tone of your skin, improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and age spots, and enhance hydration levels in the skin. Opting for a non-foaming cleanser is also the best option for mature skin as it won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. Following up with moisturizing products that are rich in ceramides or other hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid will keep your skin looking plump and fresh. Eye care is also important, use an eye cream or mask to keep your under eyes looking bright and rejuvenated.

2. Keep it light

When it comes to applying your makeup, less is more... keep it light. Opt for a liquid foundation or bb cream, as powder foundations can sit in our existing lines, making them look deeper and can also flatten our skins appearance, making us lack dimension and glow. It is also important that even with a cream or liquid formula that you apply it on top of a hydrated base and don’t layer it on thick; use thin buildable layers to avoid your foundation looking cakey and giving the appearance of aged skin. Apply your foundation with light brush strokes or my personal favorite, a damp beauty blender, for a beautiful finish.

3. Warm things up

Go for a warm foundation tone and warm bronzer to match. Make sure you blend your foundation down your neck and feel free to bronze all over. Using warm tones can help to create a more youthful appearance by counteracting dullness, imitating a natural glow, and enhancing your natural features. You can also use the bronzer to give you a slightly more sculpted look.

4. Higher blush placement

Although it’s been ingrained in us since we were teens to smile and apply blush to the apples of our cheeks, however after 50 there is a better technique. Instead, apply blush to the tops of your cheekbones and blend inwards. This will give your face a natural lifted look, as opposed to dragging it down which can happen when applying blush to the apples of your cheeks. Using a cream blush can give a dewy finish, and you can give an even more effective look by finishing with a powder blush on top.

5. It’s all in the eyes

For women over 50, youthful looking makeup is all about the eyes. You want to open them up and look bright and awake. Curl your lashes upwards to open up your eyes and use a mascara with a thin formula to prevent clumping which gives a heavy eyed, older appearance. Using a white eyeliner in your lower waterline can help make your eyes appear bigger. Some say that women over 50 shouldn’t use black eyeliner, however you can still be bold. The contrast that the black liner brings can give your eyes an alert look. Otherwise, a chocolate brown can never go wrong. When it comes to eyeshadow, using a small brush starting from the outer corner and work inwards along your lash line, gradually blending the colour lighter as it goes inwards, will give you a wide-eyed look.

So don’t be afraid to keep using your favourite makeup products as you get older, sometimes it’s just a matter of learning a couple of new tips and tricks! By implementing these tips, you are certain to be radiating confidence and youthfulness.
