5 Makeup Trends We’re Bringing Into 2023
As we say goodbye to another year, with it go many of the trends that it brought. However, trends are cyclical, and some even stick around into the following year. Beauty is an experimental art, all about pushing the boundaries and expressing yourself, so when trends come around, it’s always a good excuse to experiment with something new. So get your products and tools ready, because today we’re discussing the top 5 makeup trends that we loved so much last year that we’re bringing them into 2022 with us!
‘Cold Girl’ Makeup
The title of the “cold girl” makeup trend really speaks for itself. It involves creating a makeup look that gives you a flushed look, as though you have just stepped out of the cold. We expect this ‘apres ski’ style trend to continue into 2023, due to the youthful glow it promotes. To achieve the ‘cold girl’ look, simply apply blush from cheek to cheek, with some precision on the tip of the nose, which imitates the look we get when a cold climate promotes circulation to our face. An easy trend that has your skin looking fresh and radiant, yes please!
Wednesday Addams Glam
TV and popular culture always have some degree of influence on the latest beauty trends, and a monumental series in 2022 was Tim Burton’s Addam’s Family reboot, ‘Wednesday’. With the show’s popularity, came a surge in fans taking inspiration from Jenna Ortega’s character and creating incredible goth glam looks. Think dark glossy lips, broody smokey eyes, and two braids. These statement looks certainly have some longevity, especially as we head into Autumn, which is the perfect season for these Halloween-esque tones. If there is to be a season 2 (fingers crossed!) this trend is sure to stick around.
Y2K 3.0
Talk about cyclical! The Y2K trend re-emerged around 2020, and is still yet to phase out. We expect that it will remain prominent in 2023 and we’re here for it! The Y2K makeup trend alludes back to the early 2000s, a time where Christina Aguilera, the Olsen twins, and Paris Hilton were the ‘it girls’, and the looks were bold, colourful, and sassy. Ombre lips, frosted eyeshadow, thin brows, and colourful liner were the go to’s. In the past few years we’ve seen numerous celebrities rock Y2K styles, such as Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion, so it is a trend that has been seen at award shows and red carpet events. Being such a fun, nostalgic throwback trend, we’re all for keeping this one going in 2023!
The Euphoria Effect
Another show that has heavily influenced beauty culture is HBO’s Euphoria. This series broke all the makeup rules in the best way, with the main characters sporting glittery eyelids, diamante tears, face gems, glossy lips, and more. These on-screen looks sparked a makeup revolution that took social media and the red carpet by storm, and has been so influential that it’s definitely here to stay. Euphoria beauty is all about pushing the boundaries by experimenting with new colours and mixing mediums, and stepping out of our comfort zone should be something we all try to do in the new year. So, definitely keep the Euphoria effect on your radar this year!
Graphic liner
Graphic liner was one of the hottest trends of 2022, so its no wonder we’re bringing this one into 2023. This edgy look is all about trying different liners and stick shadows to create cool shapes and using negative space for a striking, effective look. Many of us tend to shy away from graphic liner as heck, doing a simple wing can be hard enough... but graphic eyeliner is not just for the makeup pros anymore! There are many hacks to creating a clean and sharp graphic liner look. Opt for an eyeliner and correcter pen in one, so you can erase any mistakes, or simply have a pointed q-tip and some micellar water at the ready to clean up those lines. Given that this trend is sure to impress, but is easier to achieve than meets the eye, it’s a definite must try in the coming year!
So although some trends don’t make it past their hype season, there are some that are worth holding on to. Take the opportunity to keep loving some of these trends, or try them out if you haven’t already... they’re not going anywhere just yet!
